We have had our mugs since we were married 25 years ago. They have served us well but it felt like time to make a change (25 years is old by any measure for a mug), so we treated ourselves to a new set of beautifully coloured mugs in darks greens and blues.
For some unknown reason, I put them away in the cupboard the opposite way up from usual. (When we make changes in the Bouffler household we really do go all out - no half measures). The next day however, husband reached for the mug and stuck it under the coffee machine only to have the coffee spill everywhere. 25 years of behaviour is hard to shake and without looking, he had put the cup under the machine as he always did, except this time it was upside down and, given the slightly darker colour, he didn't notice.
It makes me wonder how much we all do things without really looking and how much do we miss by not really seeing.
This morning I read about Zacchaeus, who climbed the tree to see Jesus, I suppose that for most of the crowd he was invisible, they would not have been looking up, but Jesus of course doesn't miss him, he notices and things change for Zacchaeus, and indeed for those around him.
May we be awake to placing our mugs the right way up in the coffee machine, and may we be awake to what God is showing us.
"And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” Luke 19 vs 5
