Of mangers and things

Big dilemma at last night's meeting over the manger.

What will we use? Various suggestions were put forward,  a cot borrowed , or a planter on legs , or even the offer to build one from scratch. Spoiled for choice - yet it wasn't so for the baby who arrived on that Christmas night.
His parent's had to take what was available , a trough where the animal feed was kept. Nothing  luxurious, or custom made, or probably even clean -  hard to imagine with today's standards of cleanliness.

I have often wondered what would have happened if Jesus had been born into wealth and riches, power and influence. Could he have used that to spread his message, would he have gained the respect of world leaders and lived longer than his 33 years?

It was never the plan, his coming into poverty gave a wonderful message even at the start that this Saviour was here for those who had least, those who were in need. So the manger must be rough, it must be old and smelly and used,  for only then is it right to hold the servant king.

"He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
    and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and the rich he has sent away empty." Luke 1 vs 46-55
