The Snow Day

Firstly apologies to anyone reading this who has been struggling with snowy weather over the last few weeks but here in Essex in this rarified little corner we have not had any ...yet.

And it is that last word that is driving this .

Every night the forecast hints at it, some of the papers generalise with their dramatic headlines and when you teach, no matter what age, there is an air of anticipation.

Yesterday morning around nine snow started to fall outside my classroom window and my six formers were desperate. I use that word deliberately because they desperately want a snow day, a day off, a day with permission to do nothing or a day unscheduled to catch up on assignments and work they can't fit in at present.

I wonder if anyone has looked at the psychology behind a snow day. What is it that will not let us stop until it is impossible to carry on? What is it that brings such relief when we are given the gift of time with no judgment or little voice telling us we should be doing something else?

The moment passed , the sky cleared and it was business a usual - but it does make me wonder ?

I found this little poem recently which seems to say it all

"TAKE TIME"

Take time to think:
it is the source of power.

Take time to read;
it is the foundation of wisdom.

Take time to play;
it is the secret of staying young.

Take time to be quiet;
it is the opportunity to see God.

Take time to be aware;
it is the opportunity to help others.

Take time to love and be loved;
it is God's greatest gift.

Take time to laugh;
it is the music of the soul.

Take time to be friendly;
it is the road to happiness.

Take time to dream;
it is what the future is made of.

Take time to pray;
it is the greatest power on earth.
