National Day of Reflection

Last week, I was attempting to record something on my phone and it refused. Not being techy, it took me a while to make the connection between the notices saying my storage was full and the fact that it wouldn't take on any more without giving up something.

I think I have some sympathy with my phone.

Tomorrow is a day for the nation to reflect on the year that has just been , I wonder if in a sense it is a time for us to recognise that our storage is full. This year has thrown so much at us, fears and losses, anxieties and disruption and there is a sense that people are very, very tired.

So tomorrow it might be worth taking time to offload some of the things we are carrying around. Our chapel at St Mary's Church will be open from 10am until 6pm, a lovely quiet sacred space to be still and pray and hold before God all that the year has brought. It be that you wish to add a stone to the cairn in memory of something or someone you have lost this year. It may be that you just want to take a moment at 12 noon to stop and be.... however you choose, do take time and space.

We hope we are moving on to better days and there will be much to be done as we emerge from this time, but tomorrow is a time for lament, a time to stop and think and remember, a time to recognise how full our storage is and make some space for peace.

A Church of England Prayer for the National Day of Reflection

Dear God,
Be with us as we think about all that has changed this year,
And help us to trust that you are always with us.
Be close to us as we remember those who have died,
And help us to trust they are at peace with you.
Show us how to reach out to others with kindness and care,
So that hope shines out in every heart and home,
Amen
