When things go wrong...

This morning's readings seemed to me to give two stories of reactions when things go wrong.

In the Old Testament, there is the King who finds that his plans are not going well and so his answer is to look around for other Gods to worship that might bring a bit more success.

The other is Paul, recounting the story of Abraham, who, even though he cannot possibly see how things could work out, does stay with his belief, listens to God and follows his instructions.

I was reflecting on  current reactions when things are not going well, they are not so very different from the King in the first story. Sometimes we just give up and do something else, at other times we look for other things which will make us happier. Yet there is something very powerful about holding on through difficulties. Often it teaches us much, and the good times, when they come, are the more precious for having travelled and held on through the hard bits.

Abraham of course saw the promise made to him fulfilled, while the King didn't do so well.

" Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed, and so became the father of many nations. " Romans 4 vs 18

May we, when we are against all hope, in hope believe.
