Cleaning the porridge pan

As we move into Autumn, the changing season means it is time for me to switch to porridge inthe mornings. There are implications involved in this, mainly around time. It takes longer to prepare and perhaps the most daunting part of the change is the washing of the porridge pan.

Over the years I have experimented with shortcuts. I have microwaved and bought the porridge mug, illustrated with helpful lines and instructions to make the porridge without really having to think. All good and helpful but, in my opinion, it doesn't taste quite the same. So I am stuck with the task of washing the porridge pan and it needs to be done by hand, thoroughly.  I have also been seduced into thinking if I throw it in the dishwasher and close the door my troubles are over but of course as anyone who has tried this knows, the sticking power of porridge after a day in the dishwasher would be sufficient to repair the Forth road bridge.

The question then comes down to why.
Why bother? Because there is nothing quite so wonderful to start the day in the colder months as a bowl of porridge with banana and honey, and it is worth the trouble.

Thankfully God seems to think the same about us.  Even though we are pretty hard to keep clean, he is willing to give us a new start, to forgive the times we keep getting it wrong, keep going our own way and messing things up. And he does it only because he loves us and seems to think we too are worth the trouble.

"The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbour his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
    or repay us according to our iniquities." Psalm 103 vs 8-10
