You only have to keep still...

Last weeks' Chelsea flower show brought again the joy and colour of the best in gardening and hearing the stories of how hard the designers have worked throughout the year to ensure perfection on the day is always inspiring. In my own little ( very little ) patch, I have been working hard to protect my new plants, firstly from the unseasonal cold weather, then the very hot spell, and, as always in this part of the world, the lack of rain ( except for last night when the bar b que was just about ready to go - but that's another story).

However as I walked the fields this morning I couldn't help but notice how very beautiful the hedgerow looked. The dog roses are in full bloom and although all is chaos - the very antipathy to Chelsea- it is still very beautiful and it happens without us doing anything at all.

This mornings' reading from Nine Days of Prayer painted a very different scene. The Israelites are fleeing Egypt and they look back to see the Egyptians bearing down on them, all is chaos and fear as in their panic they try to save themselves. But Moses said

"The Lord will fight for you, and you only have to keep still"

All this running around, all this trying to keep control, to get things right, to make things happen, how necessary is it when all along God is doing just that, in his own time, in his own way?

Might we just be getting in the way?

Lots to think about.
