A whisper of summer

At the end of the summer I dried a few seed heads from the garden thinking I might spray them for Christmas and immediately forgot I had them so Christmas came and went without that particular decoration. I could also say the same about lovely Christmas thread I bought too early and forgot about and while we are on the subject an Anniversary card which has been sitting in my desk for so many months that it is now a candidate for our anniversary this year.

Anyway, when I discovered the flowers and put them out it seemed to me they were like a whisper of Summer, a lasting remnant which gives a hint of the pleasures to come.

Elijah was struggling to keep going. He had done all God asked of him, with spectacular results and was exhausted, so he retreated to a distant place and lay down without the strength to go on. He searched for God and did not find him in the wind and the fire, but then heard a whisper and it was in the whisper that he heard God.

God can speak to us in many ways, but it is often the whisper, the subtle growth in the light which shows us the lengthening days and the hint of Spring, the quiet word spoken by someone which reaches deeply into our hearts and reminds us of his presence.

We should take comfort in these whispers, for they are reminders that God is with us and while we may not see him as we cannot see the Summer flowers, yet he is there and all will be well.

"The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”"
1 Kings 19 vs 11-13
